The aim of the workshop is to introduce the students to a band environment in both rehearsal and live situations. All of the students will be given a song to learn on the day. Professional music tutors, all of whom have great experience in the live performance environment will run the workshop and will mentor each group by instrument. It will then be a matter of putting the bands together to perform the piece at the end of each workshop day.
You need to be able to play a BAND instrument (guitar, bass, keyboard or drums) or sing and be at around Grade 2 level or above. If you are a guitarist, you need to play the ELECTRIC guitar, not classical guitar.
On each day there will be a maximum of 6 places in each instrument group (6 drummers, 6 guitarists, 6 bassists, 6 keyboard players and 6 vocalists), all of Grade 2 standard upwards (just to point out this doesn’t necessarily mean you MUST have a Grade). Here is the proposed schedule:
10:00am-10:30am: TUTOR PERFORMANCE
The tutors will perform the chosen track for study. There will also be a short informative talk about the piece, highlighting important musical features to listen out for.
10:30am-12:00pm: SECTIONAL PRACTICE
The students will be separated into their instrument groups so the tutors can shed light on the finer details of the chosen song and help each student to master their part.
12:00pm-12:30pm: LUNCH BREAK
12:30pm-2:00pm: BAND PRACTICE
The students will be placed into bands to have a supervised rehearsal in preparation for the live performance workshop.
02:00pm-04:00pm: LIVE PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
The students will be asked to perform the song they have learned in their newly formed bands. After each performance there will a critique discussion by the whole class, in order to reflect on each band’s achievement. The performances will be recorded and filmed LIVE so that each member can walk away with something they can show to friends and family.
This is a great opportunity for students to network with other musicians, possibly form a band and to gain confidence in the performance environment.
